Insect Screens FAQ

Most insect screens are barely noticeable once installed. Depending on the type and weave selected, they allow more than enough natural light through.

Most meshes will keep out the majority of flying insects. If you are having a problem with smaller flying insects like fruit flies a small weaved mesh may need to be considered. Flying insects in general will not try to squeeze through a small gap though.

If you are considering installing insect screens it’s important to check whether the windows or door system you have selected can accommodate insect screens. It’s important to remember that depending on the window or door type and the sash opening option selected the screens will need to be either internally or externally installed.

For maximum airflow efficiency screens do need to be cleaned regularly so that they remain free from dirt, dust, and insect debris. For this reason, panels or smaller sliding-type screens are designed to be easily removed, cleaned in a standard solution of detergent and warm water, and then rinsed off and air-dried. The mesh is designed not to corrode or shrink, so this type of cleaning is ideal. The powder-coated frames can then be easily wiped over using a damp cloth. Larger sliding screen doors will need to be cleaned ‘in situ’ using similar methods described above. Alternatively, roller-type screens are best cleaned ‘in situ’ using a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.

Although relatively tough, standard fibreglass mesh isn’t designed to be pet-proof per se. If you are concerned that your animal might ruin your fly screen then it is possible to install pet-friendly mesh which has been specially toughened for use in homes with pets. Stronger Pet-friendly mesh will also serve well in keeping monkeys out.

There’s no such thing as an indestructible fly screen, however, you can purchase screen mesh made from other materials such as stainless steel. These however are usually more difficult to fit and are more expensive to purchase. If it’s a screen that offers the protection you’re after, then the stainless steel screen will be your best option.
